Stape Review (2026): What Stape Is, How Its Server-Side GTM Hosting Works, Pros and Cons
Stape is legitimate, cheap and good at what it sells: hosting for server-side Google Tag Manager containers, plus power-ups, gateways and platform apps. It isn't a done-for-you tracking product. If someone on your team builds GTM containers, it's the lowest-cost way to run server-side tracking at volume. If nobody does, the build and upkeep cost more than the hosting.
If you're already leaning away from it, our guide to 9 Stape alternatives covers the field. For this review, we checked Stape's own site, docs, pricing and app listings on October 24, 2026. Upstack is our product, and it appears only where we compare the two.
Stape review: the verdict
| Pick Stape if you... | Skip Stape if you... |
|---|---|
| Have someone who builds and maintains GTM containers | Have no GTM skills in-house and no agency |
| Want the lowest running cost for server-side tracking at volume | Want tracking set up and maintained for you |
| Need custom server-side logic, like profit values or CRM data | Want attribution reporting, not just event delivery |
| Run WordPress, Magento, Wix or BigCommerce as well as Shopify | Want one predictable price per order |
What is Stape?
Stape is a hosting platform for server-side Google Tag Manager. You create a server GTM container in Google Tag Manager, and Stape runs the server it lives on, on a subdomain of your site. Around that hosting, it sells power-ups, gateways for ad platforms' conversion APIs, and apps that connect platforms such as Shopify, WordPress and several CRMs.
Per its about page, Stape was founded in June 2021 and is self-funded, with no investors. Its timeline reads:
- July 2022: 10,000 customers.
- August 2022: EU hosting.
- January 2023: a Meta Conversions API product.
- January 2024: ISO, SOC 2, HIPAA and GDPR compliance.
- July 2024: 100,000 customers.
- August 2024: a team of 50.
- Late 2024 and early 2025: gateways for TikTok, Snapchat and Meta's Signals Gateway.
Today it lists 200,000+ clients, 65,000+ containers deployed, 45,000+ Conversions API Gateways, 500 partners and 25 server zones.
Is Stape legit?
Yes. It's a real company with a long public track record, published pricing, compliance certifications and a large partner program. It also contributes 70+ templates to Google Tag Manager's community gallery. The fair complaints about Stape, covered below, are about how much work it leaves to you, not whether it's real.
How does Stape work?
Server-side GTM hosting
Your web GTM container, or a GA4 tag, sends events to a server GTM container on Stape. Server tags you configure forward them to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and anything else with a server-side template. Stape bills by requests: every incoming hit, including script loads, counts once, however many platforms it's forwarded to.
Custom loader and custom domain
Every plan includes a custom domain, so cookies are set first-party, and the Custom Loader, which renames the gtm.js and gtag.js paths so tracking prevention is less likely to block them. A global CDN serves those scripts.
Power-ups
Per its pricing page, the Free plan includes Requests Analytics, the Setup Wizard, the Anonymizer and the Click ID Restorer, which recovers lost click IDs such as GCLID in Safari and Brave. Pro adds:
- Cookie Keeper, which extends first-party cookies against Safari's tracking prevention.
- Bot Detection and ad blocker info.
- The Data Store, a built-in database.
- The POAS Data Feed, for profit-based bidding.
- The Enricher, which saves and merges user data from earlier requests to fill gaps in later events.
Business adds Monitoring rules and multi-zone infrastructure.
Gateways
Stape also hosts gateways that need no GTM: Meta's Conversions API Gateway from $10 a month per pixel billed monthly, plus gateways for TikTok's Events API and Snapchat's Conversions API, per its gateway pricing. Our guide to the Conversions API Gateway explains the trade-offs.
Platform apps
Stape's free Shopify app, Stape Conversion Tracking, adds the web GTM snippet to every page, pushes ecommerce events to the data layer, and sends purchase and refund webhooks straight to the server container. Stape also has a WordPress plugin, a Magento extension, Wix, BigCommerce and Drupal integrations, and apps that send CRM status updates from HubSpot, Pipedrive, Zoho and HighLevel to ad platforms.
Setup: what to expect
Stape is self-serve:
- Create a server container in Google Tag Manager and connect it to Stape with the Setup Wizard.
- Point a custom subdomain at it with a DNS record.
- Install the platform app if there is one, such as the Shopify app.
- Build and test your web and server tags in GTM's preview mode, using Stape's templates where they fit.
How long it takes depends on your GTM skills. After launch, theme changes, new apps and platform updates are yours to keep up with.
If you'd rather not, Stape Care does the setup or an audit from $1,100, then ongoing care for $99 to $199 a month depending on the plan. Support on paid plans is 24/7 by email and chat, with help desk response times from 3 business days on Pro down to 1 on Enterprise.
How much does Stape cost?
Server GTM hosting is free to 10,000 requests a month. Billed monthly, Pro is $20 for 500,000 requests, Business $100 for 5 million and Enterprise $200 for 20 million, or $17, $83 and $167 a month billed annually. Custom plans are quoted. Each site needs its own plan. Every plan, what counts as a request, and costs by order volume are in our Stape pricing guide.
Stape reviews: what customers say
Checked October 24, 2026:
- Shopify App Store: the Stape Conversion Tracking app has 4.3 stars from 42 reviews on its listing, with 7 of 42 (17%) at one or two stars.
- Trustpilot: stape.io has 3.7 from 128 reviews on its Trustpilot profile.
What reviewers praise:
- Low cost for what it does.
- Hosting that scales automatically.
- Ready-made templates and the Setup Wizard.
- EU hosting.
What reviewers criticize:
- Hard to configure without GTM skills. Several low reviews come from merchants who expected an app that does the tracking for them.
- Request counts above expectations. One October 2026 reviewer said Stape counted about eight times as many requests as their GA4 events.
- Billing after removing the app. Stape's reply: the Shopify app is free, and the hosting plan is cancelled separately in your Stape account.
Read together, the reviews say the same thing as the verdict: Stape works well for people who know GTM, and frustrates people who don't.
Who Stape is for
Agencies and freelancers. Stape is built for people who set up tracking for many clients. Each client gets a container, consolidated invoicing and account sharing keep billing manageable, and its partner program pays commission. Stape's 70+ GTM templates save build time across clients.
In-house teams with GTM skills. A brand with an analyst or developer who already maintains GTM gets the most from Stape: low hosting cost, full control, and power-ups that would take time to build.
Multi-platform businesses. Stores on WordPress, Magento, Wix or BigCommerce, or businesses sending CRM conversions to Meta and Google, get integrations most Shopify-only tracking apps don't offer.
Not for: merchants who want an app to do the tracking. Stape's own reviews show this is where it disappoints. The Shopify app installs the plumbing, but someone still builds the tags.
What to check before you sign up
- Count your requests. Use Stape's advanced calculator with your page views and events, and assume script loads, preview sessions and bots add more. The Free plan's 10,000 requests are a good test.
- Decide who builds it. If it's not you, price an agency or Stape's setup from $1,100 before comparing plan prices.
- Plan your destinations. List every platform you need, such as Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and Klaviyo, and check a server-side template exists for each.
- Handle deduplication. Browser and server events must share an event ID so platforms count each order once. Our guide to Meta event duplication explains how.
- Check consent. Make sure your consent tool passes consent states to the server container, and decide whether to use the Anonymizer.
- Know how to cancel. The Shopify app and the hosting plan are separate. Cancel the plan in your Stape account, not by uninstalling the app.
How Stape compares with the alternatives
| Tool | What it is | Entry price | Who builds the tracking |

Stape pros and cons
| Pros | Cons |
|---|---|
| The lowest running cost for server-side GTM at volume | You build and maintain every tag, trigger and variable |
| A free plan to 10,000 requests, no card | Requests are hard to predict before you launch |
| Power-ups such as Cookie Keeper, Enricher and Click ID Restorer | One plan per site |
| Apps for Shopify, WordPress, Magento, Wix and CRMs | No attribution reporting; its analytics cover requests, not revenue |
| Compliance credentials, with HIPAA via a BAA on Custom | Setup and ongoing care cost extra |
| Self-funded, with a long public track record | Lower review scores than Shopify-only tracking apps |
Where Stape beats Upstack
Upstack is our product, so here's where Stape is the better pick:
- Cost. For a team that maintains its own container, Stape's hosting costs far less. Business is $83 a month billed annually for 5 million requests; Upstack Signal is $399 a month at 10,000 orders.
- Control. You can build any server-side logic, such as profit values, CRM data or custom destinations. Upstack doesn't offer a GTM container or data layer for custom tags.
- Platforms. Stape works with WordPress, Magento, Wix and more. Upstack focuses on Shopify and DTC brands.
- A free plan. Upstack has a 21-day free trial, not a free plan.
- GA4. Stape can send to GA4 through your own tags; Upstack doesn't have a GA4 destination.
Where Upstack fits better: brands that want server-side events to Meta, Google, TikTok and Klaviyo without building or maintaining tags, with each visitor resolved against our identity graph of 750M+ devices and 150M+ customers before the event is sent. Upstack Signal is priced per order with setup included.
Is Stape worth it?
Our take. Yes, if someone on your team builds GTM containers or you already pay an agency that does. Few products deliver this much for $17 to $167 a month. No, if you're buying it hoping the tracking will set itself up. Stape sells the server, and the tracking is still yours to build. For that buyer, Stape Care or a tracking app with the work included usually costs less in the end.
