Comparison

Upstack vs Stape

Stape gives you a server. Upstack gives you an answer. Stape is excellent, inexpensive hosting for server-side Google Tag Manager — but by its own documentation, Stape Analytics measures request recovery and bot traffic, not revenue. Someone still has to build the container, wire the tags, maintain them, and separately work out which channel drove the order.

Why brands switch

Three differences between a server and a product.

Stape and Upstack are not really the same kind of purchase. Stape sells you hosting for a container you build; Upstack sells you the finished measurement. These are the three places that distinction shows up in practice.

  • 01

    Infrastructure is not measurement

Stape hosts your server-side GTM container brilliantly and cheaply. What it does not do — and does not claim to do — is tell you which campaign earned the order. Their own documentation describes Stape Analytics as reporting requests recovered from ad blockers and bot versus real traffic. There is no attribution model and no channel reporting.

  • 02

Somebody has to build and keep it running

A container is a starting point. Tags, triggers, variables, deduplication, consent, and every change your theme or apps introduce afterwards are yours to maintain — or your agency’s. Stape sells that help separately: implementation starts at $1,100 and ongoing care is $99–199/mo on top of the plan.

  • 03

Compare the whole cost, not the headline

Stape Business is roughly $83–100 a month, which is genuinely cheap for the infrastructure. But a professionally implemented, supported setup is that plus a four-figure build and a monthly care plan — and still has no attribution reporting at the end of it.

Stape figures come from their published pricing and documentation, verified 2026-07-29. Prices shown are annual billing; month to month is roughly $20, $100 and $200. Two things we want to be straight about: Stape does have identity features — Enricher stitches deterministically on six identifiers — and it does have analytics, but of tracking infrastructure rather than marketing performance. Comparing $149 per order against $167 per 20M requests is not like-for-like, and we would rather say so than let the table imply it.

What it costs

Compare the stack, not the line item.

What a supported, professionally implemented setup costs in year one. Stape is dramatically cheaper for the infrastructure itself; this compares the finished thing, which is the only comparison that makes sense between the two.

From brands who switched

What they said after moving.

  • Setup took one call. The thing I did not expect was someone actually looking at our subscription app and our checkout extensions before switching it on.

  • We have extended experience with other options out there. This is the best experience and the steadiest results I have seen across any other software we have worked with.

  • We looked at several competitors and talked to some of their customers. From our research, Upstack was by far the clear winner in terms of data accuracy, customer service and pricing.

Migration

Switching takes under 20 minutes.

This one is not really a migration. Upstack does not use Google Tag Manager, so your Stape container can stay exactly where it is while you compare, and afterwards if you still want it.

  1. Install the Upstack Shopify app. No container, no GTM dependency.

    4 min
  2. Connect your platforms. Meta, Google, TikTok and Klaviyo.

    5 min
  3. Upstack configures the rest. Conversions API, identity resolution and attribution are set up for you.

    automatic
  4. Keep your Stape container if it is doing a job. Upstack does not use GTM, so there is nothing to unpick and no conflict.

    optional
  5. Compare match quality side by side. Run both and watch EMQ and Klaviyo flow entries before you decide anything.

    week one
  6. Decide with data. Keep both, or retire the container. No lock-in either way.

    when ready

The honest part

When Stape is the better choice.

  • You or your agency have the skills in-house

If someone on your side knows server-side GTM, Stape is the better buy and it is not close on price. $200 a year for 500,000 requests is extraordinary value for the infrastructure, and you keep total control of the container.

  • You need arbitrary routing and custom logic

Full container access means any tag, any destination, any transformation — plus file proxying, request scheduling, BigQuery and Firestore, and log export to S3 or GCS. Our pipeline is opinionated by design, and that is a real limit.

  • You run many sites, or you are an agency

White-label, delegated billing, account sharing, up to 50 domains on Enterprise and revenue share for agencies with several containers. If you manage tracking for thirty clients, Stape has an operating model for that and we do not.

  • You need enterprise compliance breadth

ISO, SOC 2, HIPAA, GDPR, CCPA and DORA, with BAA and private cluster options, plus 25 server zones for data residency. For procurement outside DTC ecommerce, that list does more work than ours.

Common questions

Upstack vs Stape, answered.

Is Stape really a competitor?

Not exactly, and we would rather say so. Stape sells hosting for server-side Google Tag Manager. Upstack sells a managed tracking and measurement product. They overlap on getting events to Meta and Google reliably; they diverge completely on whether anything tells you what those events were worth.

Does Stape do identity resolution?

Their Enricher power-up does deterministic stitching across sessions and devices, matching on six identifiers in priority order, on the Business plan and above. It enriches outbound events rather than building a customer record you can report on, but it is a real capability and we are not going to pretend otherwise.

Does Stape have analytics?

Yes, but of a different thing. Stape Analytics reports requests recovered from ad blockers and tracking prevention, bot versus real traffic, and breakdowns by client and browser. Their documentation is explicit that it does not provide revenue or channel attribution.

Stape looks much cheaper. Is it?

For the infrastructure alone, yes, by a wide margin. The comparison changes if you need someone to build and maintain it: implementation starts at $1,100 and Stape Care is $99–199 a month on top of the plan. And at the end of that you still have no attribution reporting.

Can I use both?

Yes. Some brands run Stape for custom tag routing alongside Upstack for identity and reporting. If that is your setup we will work with it.

What if I already have a Stape container?

Keep it if it is doing a job. Upstack does not need GTM, so nothing has to be unpicked — you can run both while you compare match rates and then decide.
