Northbeam vs Google Analytics 4 (2026): Attribution, Accuracy and Cost Compared
GA4 is free and covers attribution well enough for brands whose paid media is mostly Google and who mainly need to see which channels send buyers. Northbeam, from $1,500, is built for brands spending heavily across Meta, TikTok, CTV and Google that want multi-touch credit, verified ad views, and MMM or incrementality on top. Adding Northbeam doesn't mean dropping GA4, which still covers site analytics.
If you're choosing between paid tools instead, our comparison of 8 Northbeam alternatives covers the wider field. For this Northbeam vs GA4 comparison, we checked Google's Analytics Help Center and Northbeam's pricing page and docs on October 24, 2026. Upstack is our product; it comes up near the end, with its limits.

What GA4 attribution does in 2026
GA4 now offers three attribution models, per Google's attribution help page:
- Data-driven attribution, the model Google recommends. It uses machine learning on both converting and non-converting paths, and builds a separate model for each advertiser and each key event. Google says conversions can be reattributed for up to 7 days after they happen.
- Paid and organic last click, also called last non-direct click. It gives all the credit to the last channel clicked, ignoring direct visits.
- Google paid channels last click, which credits the last Google Ads click and falls back to paid and organic last click when there isn't one.
First click, linear, time decay and position-based were removed in November 2023, so older guides that compare five or six GA4 models are out of date. Every GA4 model excludes direct visits from credit unless the whole path is direct.
The lookback window is 90 days by default for most key events, with 30 or 60 as options, and 30 days (or 7) for first visits and app opens. It applies to every model.
GA4 also does more with cost than it used to. Its All channels report shows ads cost, cost per key event and return on ad spend by channel once cost data is present. Google Ads cost arrives when you link the account. Meta campaign cost, clicks and impressions can now come in through a Meta link, as long as your Meta ads carry consistent utm_source and utm_medium tags. Other platforms need Data Import from a file, BigQuery, Snowflake or similar.
Two limits matter most for a brand spending on paid social:
- Views barely count. Data-driven attribution credits YouTube engaged views, such as watching an ad for 30 seconds. It doesn't see someone who scrolled past your Meta or TikTok ad and bought later.
- Cross-device journeys depend on logins. GA4's reporting identity joins devices through your own User-ID for signed-in users, then the device ID, then modeling. A shopper who browses on a phone and buys on a laptop without logging in looks like two people.
When visitors decline analytics cookies, GA4's behavioral modeling estimates their behavior from similar users who accept, but only once the property has enough consented traffic for Google to trust the model.
What Northbeam adds
Northbeam is a paid measurement platform, so the question is what you get beyond the free tool. Five things stand out in its docs.
- Its own first-party data. Northbeam's pixel collects data on your own domain, set up with a DNS A-record, alongside an order sync and the spend from each connected ad account. Setup also requires Northbeam's UTM parameters on your ads.
- Seven attribution models. First Touch, Last Touch, Last Non-Direct Touch and Linear, plus three proprietary multi-touch models: Clicks-Only, Clicks + Modeled Views, and Clicks + Deterministic Views, per its attribution model docs.
- Verified view credit. Clicks + Deterministic Views adds impressions that participating platforms verify against real orders, using exact identifiers such as order ID or hashed email, rather than modeling them. This is the clearest gap GA4 can't fill for Meta, TikTok, Snapchat and Pinterest.
- Two ways to book the revenue. Accounting modes let you credit revenue to the day of the ad touchpoint (Accrual Performance, for daily optimization) or the day of the order (Cash Snapshot, for reporting).
- More than MTA. Media Mix Modeling+ is optional on Enterprise and Incrementality is optional on Professional and Enterprise. Apex sends Northbeam's attribution to ad platforms for custom attribution, and every plan includes the Northbeam MCP for asking an AI assistant about your data.
Our Northbeam review goes through each module, and MTA vs MMM vs incrementality explains which question each measurement method answers.
Northbeam vs GA4 cost
Standard GA4 is free; Google calls it free of charge on its Analytics page. Analytics 360, Google's paid enterprise version, has no published price: its page offers "Talk to Sales".
Northbeam publishes starting prices on its pricing page:
| Plan | Built for, per Northbeam | Starting price | Term |
|---|---|---|---|
| Growth | Seven-figure brands under $200K a month on ads, through an agency partner | Quoted | Not stated |
| Starter | Brands spending less than $1.5M a year on ads | $1,500 | Month to month |
| Professional | Up to $500K a month on ads | $3,500 a month | Annual |
| Enterprise | More than $500K a month on ads | Quoted | Annual |
Northbeam's FAQ says the actual monthly price is informed by your data volume, measured in pageviews, so the listed rates are starting points. At list price, Starter is at least $18,000 a year and Professional at least $42,000. That's 10% of a $15,000 monthly ad budget but about 1.2% of $125,000. Our Northbeam pricing guide covers each plan, the ad credits and how the pageview pricing works.
The real cost of staying on GA4 is the decisions it can't support. If most of your budget is on Meta or TikTok and you're judging it on GA4's click-based data, the channels that sell through views will look weaker than they are.
Is Northbeam more accurate than GA4?
Neither tool is the truth. Each applies its own model, window and identity rules to the data it can collect, and neither publishes an independent accuracy test. Northbeam's own docs note that its Last Non-Direct Touch model "compares consistently well" with GA4's last click, which tells you the gap between the tools comes mostly from the models you choose, not from one tool seeing orders the other misses.
Where Northbeam can be more complete is in the inputs: verified views from ad platforms, its own pixel on a first-party subdomain, and order data from your store. Where GA4 can be more complete is in site behavior and Google Ads, since it links directly to Google Ads and shares key events for bidding.
To test both on your store:
- Export orders from Shopify for a date range, in your store's timezone.
- Compare that total with Northbeam (Cash Snapshot) and GA4's purchase key events over the same dates.
- Set both tools to a comparable model, such as Last Non-Direct Touch against paid and organic last click, before comparing channels.
- Spot-check ten orders: does each tool credit the channel the customer's journey suggests?
Why do GA4 and Northbeam show different numbers?
Northbeam's guide to why it differs from another platform lists the settings to match before you investigate: date range and timezone, metric definition, filters, attribution model and window, accounting mode, and when the data was generated. The usual causes of a gap:
- Different models. Data-driven attribution in GA4 and a multi-touch model in Northbeam split the same order differently.
- Views. Clicks + Deterministic Views credits verified Meta, TikTok, Snapchat or Pinterest impressions that GA4 never sees.
- Dates. Northbeam's Accrual mode books revenue on the day of the touchpoint, while GA4's reports count a key event on the day it happens. Compare GA4 with Cash Snapshot.
- Windows and lookbacks. GA4 looks back 90 days at most; Northbeam's default lookback is 180 days, with lifetime attribution windows available.
- Consent and modeling. GA4 models users who decline cookies once it has enough data, so its totals can include estimates.
For the separate question of why GA4 disagrees with Meta Ads Manager or Google Ads, see GA4 vs ad platforms: why numbers don't match.
Using GA4 and Northbeam together
Most of the time this isn't a choice. GA4 does jobs Northbeam doesn't try to do: site behavior, funnels, landing pages, organic search, and key events that feed Google Ads bidding. Northbeam does the job GA4 struggles with: deciding how to split spend across Meta, TikTok, Google, CTV and other channels when views and multi-touch journeys matter.
Running both is straightforward. They don't send the same events to the same place: GA4 shares key events with Google Ads, and Northbeam's Apex uses a separate Passback event that Meta processes apart from your Purchase events, so your existing pixel and Conversions API setup stay as they are. Keep your UTM tags consistent, because both tools rely on them for non-Google traffic, and agree inside your team on which tool answers which question before the numbers start disagreeing in meetings.
Where Rockerbox fits
Brands that outgrow GA4 often shortlist Rockerbox alongside Northbeam. Rockerbox offers multi-touch attribution, marketing mix modeling and fully managed incrementality testing on one data foundation, with coverage that reaches OTT and TV and direct mail, per its homepage and plans page. It publishes no prices, and its homepage says MTA or MMM can take six to eight weeks to set up. Our Northbeam vs Rockerbox comparison goes through the differences, and Triple Whale vs Northbeam vs Rockerbox covers the three-way choice.
Which should you choose: Northbeam or GA4?
| If your business... | Choose |
|---|---|
| Spends mostly on Google Ads | GA4 |
| Spends under about $15,000 a month on ads | GA4, until the budget justifies a paid tool |
| Spends heavily on Meta, TikTok or CTV, where views drive sales | Northbeam |
| Needs MMM or incrementality testing with its attribution | Northbeam (Enterprise or Professional add-ons) |
| Wants site analytics, funnels and organic search reporting | GA4, alongside anything else |
| Needs a published price and no contract | GA4, or Northbeam Starter |
| Has offline, TV or direct mail spend to measure | Look at Rockerbox too |
When neither is the right fit
Some Shopify brands land between the two: GA4 isn't enough for their Meta and TikTok spend, but a measurement platform priced by ad spend is more than they need. What they usually want is multi-touch attribution they can act on and better conversion data reaching the ad platforms.
Upstack Data, our product, covers those two jobs. Upstack Attribution reports first-click, last-click and any-click attribution with margin and LTV reporting, and Upstack Signal sends events server-side to Meta, Google Ads, TikTok and other platforms, resolved against an identity graph of 750M+ devices and 150M+ customers. Pricing is per order and month to month: Attribution is $99 a month for up to 1,000 orders, and Attribution + Signal is $199, with a 21-day free trial and a 60-day 4x ROI guarantee. Its limits are plain: it doesn't do MMM, incrementality testing or view-based attribution, and it doesn't send events to GA4, so you'd keep GA4 for site analytics.
Frequently asked questions
Is GA4 good enough for attribution?
For many brands, yes. If most of your paid media is Google Ads, your journeys are short, and you mainly need to know which channels send buyers, GA4's data-driven model is free and adequate. It falls short when views on Meta, TikTok or CTV drive sales, when shoppers switch devices without logging in, or when you need MMM or incrementality testing.
Is Northbeam more accurate than GA4?
Not by default. Northbeam collects more inputs, including verified ad views and its own first-party pixel, so its multi-touch models can credit channels GA4 misses. Set both to a comparable last-click model and Northbeam's docs say they compare well. Test against your Shopify orders before trusting either.
Does Northbeam replace GA4?
No. Northbeam replaces GA4 as the tool you use to split ad budget, but GA4 still handles site analytics, funnels, organic search and the key events that feed Google Ads bidding. You'd normally keep both.
What attribution models does GA4 have?
Three: data-driven, paid and organic last click, and Google paid channels last click. Google removed first click, linear, time decay and position-based in November 2023.
Why do GA4 and Northbeam show different numbers?
They use different models, windows and date logic. Northbeam's Accrual mode books revenue on the day of the ad touchpoint, it can credit verified ad views GA4 can't see, and its default lookback is 180 days against GA4's 90. Match the model, window, dates and accounting mode before investigating a gap.
Compare Northbeam with a per-order option
If you're weighing Northbeam because GA4 no longer answers your Meta and TikTok questions, our Upstack vs Northbeam comparison shows what changes when attribution and server-side tracking are priced per order, month to month, and where Northbeam is still the better choice.
