How it flows
How a Shopify event reaches AppLovin. Captured by the Upstack Pixel, resolved to a person, then reported through the Axon Pixel.
01 Capture
Captured from Shopify
One Upstack app setup that captures Shopify storefront and checkout events with the Upstack Pixel, records every order directly from Shopify, and forwards both to every tool you spend on.

02 Understand
Resolved to one person before it leaves
Every Shopify event is matched against a 750M+ device graph, so a phone browse and a desktop checkout resolve to one customer rather than two strangers.

Shopify to AppLovin, in detail
How Shopify events reach AppLovin Axon.
Upstack tracks AppLovin through the Axon Pixel on your storefront. The Upstack Pixel captures each event and enriches it with identity and click-ID data, then Upstack loads the Axon Pixel and reports the event to AppLovin with the aleid click ID attached. Because Upstack owns the capture, AppLovin events carry the same identity data as the rest of your tracking, with no separate Axon tag or second set of event mappings.

Browser only, for now
AppLovin currently receives events from the browser only: with LinkedIn, it’s one of two destinations whose Tracking Method offers just Browser. The browser path can be blocked by ad blockers and browser privacy settings.
Matching needs an identifier
AppLovin matches a user on at least one of aleid, axwrt, client_id, email, phone or user_id. Ads should link straight to your store so the aleid lands in the URL.
Standard events only
AppLovin can’t receive custom events, and post-purchase upsell events aren’t sent to it.
One Axon tag
Upstack loads the Axon Pixel for you. If your theme, Google Tag Manager or another app also loads it, remove that copy: two tags with the same Pixel ID can double count events.
The catch
AppLovin receives events from the browser only.
Upstack loads the Axon Pixel for you, so remove any other Axon tag in your theme, Google Tag Manager or another app: two tags with the same Pixel ID can double count events.

What changes
What changes when Shopify feeds AppLovin. Two gains on the AppLovin side, two on the Shopify side.
AppLovin
The Axon Pixel, loaded for you
Upstack loads the Axon Pixel once the destination is saved, so there is no separate Axon tag or second set of event mappings to maintain.
AppLovin
Identity-resolved events
Events sent to AppLovin carry the resolved customer whenever Upstack can identify one, matched against a 750M+ device graph.
Shopify
Orders recorded from Shopify itself
Purchases also reach Upstack directly from Shopify, about 10 minutes after the order, so an order still counts when an ad blocker stopped the pixel or the shopper closed the page.
Shopify
Recognize returning customers
Shopify customer IDs, emails and phones are matched against the graph, so repeat buyers are identified across devices.
Setup
Live in under 20 minutes.
App install, no theme edits and no developer. You need admin access to an AppLovin Axon account with an Axon Pixel set up in the AppLovin Dashboard and owner or staff access to Shopify.

01
Connect Shopify
In the Upstack dashboard, open System, then Data Sources, and click Connect Shopify. Approve the install in your Shopify Admin: Upstack reads products, orders and customers, and writes only its own pixel.
-
02
Copy your Event Key
In the AppLovin Dashboard, open Account, General, Keys and copy the Event Key. That’s the Pixel ID Upstack needs.
-
03
Remove any existing Axon tag
Take Axon out of your theme, Google Tag Manager or any other app before Upstack starts loading it.
-
04
Add the AppLovin destination
Under Destinations, click New Destination, choose AppLovin Axon and enter the Pixel ID. Turn on Send User Data to include hashed user data, then click Create Configuration.
-
05
Check the Axon Dashboard
The Events section of your pixel in the AppLovin Axon Dashboard shows recent events. AppLovin may take a little longer than Upstack to show them.
After setup
What to check in the AppLovin Axon Dashboard.
Upstack shows the AppLovin Axon destination as Healthy.
Your pixel’s Events section in the Axon Dashboard shows recent events.
Clicking one of your live AppLovin ads lands on a URL that carries aleid.
Conversion volume settles after the first 48 hours, while AppLovin adjusts to the new event source.
Troubleshooting
Common problems and fixes.
-
No events after 10 minutes of store traffic
Check the Pixel ID (Event Key) for extra spaces or missing characters, that the destination is Healthy, and that it matches the pixel you’re checking in the Axon Dashboard.
-
Events arrive but aren’t attributed to ads
The aleid is missing. Make sure ads link straight to your store, not through a redirect that strips query parameters, and that the Upstack Pixel runs on the landing page.
-
Low match rate
Missing aleid, anonymous visitors with no email or phone, or a checkout that doesn’t collect email and phone.
-
Events counted twice
Another Axon tag with the same Pixel ID is still loading. Remove it.
FAQ
Questions about Shopify and AppLovin.
How do I connect Shopify to AppLovin?
Connect Shopify, remove any Axon tag you already load, then add the AppLovin Axon destination with your Pixel ID, the Event Key from Account, General, Keys in the AppLovin Dashboard. Upstack then loads the Axon Pixel for you. Most brands are live in under 20 minutes.
Do I need to keep my own Axon tag on the storefront?
No. Upstack loads the Axon Pixel for you once the destination is configured. If you already load Axon through your theme, Google Tag Manager or another app, remove that copy: two tags with the same Pixel ID can double count events.
What if my event match rate is low?
AppLovin’s match rate depends on how much identity data each event carries. Link AppLovin ads directly to your storefront so the aleid click ID lands in the URL, and make sure your Shopify checkout collects email and phone.
Which events does AppLovin receive?
PageView as page_view, ViewContent as view_item, AddToCart as add_to_cart, InitiateCheckout as begin_checkout and Purchase as purchase, reported from the browser through the Axon Pixel. Remove from cart, view cart, add payment info, search, lead, sign-up and subscribe are mapped too.
Which customer parameters are sent to AppLovin?
Events carry email, phone and client_id when available, plus the aleid click ID for deterministic matching. The Send User Data setting includes hashed user data for better match quality.
How do I check that Shopify events are reaching AppLovin?
Upstack marks the destination Healthy, and the Events section of the AppLovin Axon Dashboard shows recent events. AppLovin may take a little longer than Upstack to show them, and conversion volume may fluctuate during the first 48 hours.
Do I need a developer to connect Shopify to AppLovin?
No. Shopify connects as an app install with no theme edits, and most brands are live in under 20 minutes. Headless storefronts add the Upstack Pixel script instead of the theme app extension.
Does Upstack send AppLovin events server-side?
Not today. AppLovin currently receives events from the browser only, through the Axon Pixel that Upstack loads on your store, and its Tracking Method offers only Browser. Upstack still enriches each event with identity and the aleid click ID before it’s reported.
Can I send custom events or upsells to AppLovin?
No. AppLovin can’t receive custom events, and post-purchase upsell events aren’t sent to it.
