Blotout Review (2026): What Blotout Does, How EdgeTag Works, Pricing and Alternatives

Blotout is a first-party data company whose main product, EdgeTag, collects events on your own subdomain, stitches visitors into an ID graph and sends server-side conversions to more than 55 ad, email and analytics platforms. It is broad and capable, with HIPAA, single-tenant and self-hosting options most tracking tools lack. The trade-offs are per-event pricing, DNS setup and annual contracts on every plan above the $60 Starter.

This review covers Blotout the tracking and data company at blotout.io, not Blotout Home, the furniture brand. It is based on Blotout's own pricing page, product pages and EdgeTag documentation, and on its Shopify App Store reviews, all checked on October 23, 2026. Upstack competes with Blotout for Shopify brands, so we've stuck to what Blotout publishes and what its customers say. For a feature-by-feature comparison, see Upstack vs Blotout.

What is Blotout?

Blotout sells first-party data infrastructure for marketers. Its homepage now pitches four managed services built on one shared identity layer: Growth Signal (signals and measurement), Agency Software (multi-brand operations), DTC Support (an AI support agent called Evo AI) and Governance (consent and compliance). It says it is "trusted by 5,000 omni-channel brands" and lists SOC 2 Type II, HIPAA and single-tenant infrastructure among its credentials.

For most Shopify brands, Blotout means one product: EdgeTag.

Is Blotout the same as EdgeTag?

Not quite. Blotout is the company and EdgeTag is its server-side tracking product. The Shopify app is listed as "Blotout EdgeTag," the documentation lives at docs.edgetag.io, and Blotout's pricing page sells EdgeTag plans. ConsentIQ and Consent are Blotout's separate consent products, and Evo AI is its customer support agent. Our EdgeTag explainer covers first-party tracking with EdgeTag in more depth.

How does Blotout work?

Here is how EdgeTag works, from install to the events your ad platforms receive.

The collector and the first-party subdomain

EdgeTag puts a lightweight collector on your site that sends events to infrastructure on your own first-party subdomain. Per EdgeTag's getting started guide, setup needs three kinds of access: your DNS provider, your ad and email platform credentials, and your site code. During onboarding EdgeTag verifies your domain and gives you two DNS records, a TXT record to prove ownership and a CNAME record that points the new subdomain at its edge. Blotout says onboarding takes under 15 minutes if you have everything ready, and some DNS providers take longer to propagate.

How EdgeTag works lists no-code installs for Shopify (about 10 minutes), BigCommerce, WooCommerce, Salesforce Commerce Cloud and WordPress, plus JavaScript and HTTP SDKs for headless and custom storefronts.

The ID graph

EdgeTag keeps what its docs call a persistent user ID per browser that survives cookie deletion. When a visitor identifies themselves with an email or phone number, EdgeTag connects their earlier anonymous browsing to that profile. The EdgeTag product page describes "a lifetime graph, with no expiry date" that follows the same customer across sessions, devices and repeat purchases. Identifying anonymous visitors through outside data is a partner integration that Blotout prices on request.

Server-side delivery to 55+ channels

Events are formatted for each platform's API and sent in parallel, both from the browser and from the server. EdgeTag's docs list ad channels including Meta, Google Ads, TikTok, Pinterest, Snapchat, AppLovin, LinkedIn, Reddit and Bing; retention tools including Klaviyo, Attentive, Postscript, Emotive, Mailchimp and Yotpo; and analytics and warehouse destinations including GA4, Amplitude, Mixpanel, Google Cloud Pub/Sub and S3. Its pricing FAQ puts the total at 55+ integrations.

EdgeTag can also rewrite events before they leave, for example sending a separate conversion for new customers, for a product category or for margin instead of revenue.

Blotout says consent is enforced at the signal layer, so events only leave when your rules allow them. For health and wellness brands it offers a HIPAA Compliance plug-in that strips health details from ordinary tracking fields before events are sent. Its pricing FAQ says it can sign a Business Associate Agreement for HIPAA customers and offers self-hosted plans through its sales team, alongside the managed service.

How does Blotout use AI?

Three ways, per its homepage and EdgeTag page. Evo AI is a support agent trained on your catalog and policies, sold as part of the DTC Support service. Governance includes AI agents that scan your setup, flag misconfigurations and fix drift. And EdgeTag exposes an MCP-compatible API, so AI tools can query signal health and manage integrations.

Setup: what to expect

On a standard Shopify store, the app install is the quick part. The steps that take time are the ones outside Shopify:

  1. DNS. Someone with access to your DNS provider adds the TXT and CNAME records and waits for them to propagate. Blotout lets you skip the check and verifies the records later.
  2. Channel credentials. Each destination needs its own access, such as a Meta pixel ID and dataset permission.
  3. Running alongside your current setup. Blotout's onboarding on Growth and Professional includes A/B tests for Meta, Google Ads and Klaviyo, sending EdgeTag's events to a secondary pixel or conversion first, then a review before switching to the main one.
  4. Headless and custom stores. These need a front-end developer to add the collector and events. Blotout writes a specification document on higher plans or sells implementation from $299.

Budget time for that secondary-pixel test before you switch, since Blotout's own onboarding builds it in. One of the low-rated Shopify reviews describes a Hydrogen store that couldn't get past the DNS step, so check that your storefront and DNS provider are covered before you start.

How much does Blotout cost?

Blotout prices on billable events, a count that grows with pageviews and with the number of destinations you send to. Its pricing page has four tabs, and the plans differ by vertical:

PlanEcommerceLead generationHealth and wellnessHIPAA
Starter$60/mo, 100K events$60/mo, 100K eventsNot offeredNot offered
Growth$400/mo, 3M events$200/mo, 1.5M events$600/mo, 3M events$1,600/mo, 3M events
Professional$800/mo, 8M events$400/mo, 3M events$1,000/mo, 8M events$2,000/mo, 8M events
EnterpriseCustomCustomCustomCustom

The terms matter as much as the prices:

  • Starter is monthly and pay as you go, with overage at $1 per 5,000 events. Blotout sizes it at about 20,000 pageviews sent to four channels.
  • Growth and Professional are an annual commitment invoiced monthly, with a 30-day trial and an opt-out in the first 60 days. Overage is $100 per million events.
  • Extras include Shopify abandoned cart recovery at $300 to $600 depending on volume, extra stores at $30 to $100 each, one-off support requests at $100 an hour, and a site implementation add-on from $299.
  • Health and wellness brands that aren't affected by Meta's restrictions can start on the standard plans, per the FAQ.

The Shopify App Store listing shows different prices: a Basic plan at $49.99 a month for 100,000 events, a Maintenance plan at $249.99 a month with hands-on implementation support, overage at $1 per 5,000 events, and a 7-day free trial, billed every 30 days. Blotout reviews: what Shopify merchants say

On the Shopify App Store, Blotout EdgeTag has a 4.7 rating from 26 reviews: 22 five-star, 1 two-star and 3 one-star, as of October 23, 2026. We didn't check G2.

What five-star reviewers praise:

  • The support team, most often by name, for hands-on onboarding and fast answers.
  • Better event match quality on Meta and other platforms (our Event Match Quality guide explains what moves that score).
  • More Klaviyo flows and audiences triggered from identified visitors.
  • Help with headless storefronts, where reviewers say other apps fell short.

What the four low reviews criticize:

ThemeReviews
Setup that couldn't be completed, including DNS records on a Hydrogen store2 of 4
Refunds or billing that took weeks to resolve2 of 4
No measurable difference after removing it from the stack1 of 4

Most of the reviews date from 2022 to 2024, and two arrived in 2026, both five-star.

Is Blotout worth it?

For brands that need HIPAA compliance, a BAA, single-tenant data or self-hosting, Blotout is one of the few tracking vendors that offers all of them, and that alone can settle the decision. It also suits teams sending data to many destinations, or running headless and custom stores, who want engineers to set it up.

For a typical Shopify brand that needs server-side conversions for Meta, Google, TikTok and Klaviyo, the case is weaker. Per-event pricing makes the bill rise with traffic and with each destination you add, the first-party setup needs DNS changes, and anything above Starter is an annual contract. Compare it against tools priced per order, and against the Meta integration in Shopify's own Facebook and Instagram app, before you commit.

Blotout vs Upstack

Upstack Signal is the comparable product: server-side tracking for Shopify and DTC brands. The differences are in packaging and billing more than capability.

  • Billing unit. Signal is priced per order, from $149 a month, so adding a destination costs nothing extra. Blotout is priced per event. Our pricing page has the bands.
  • Setup. Signal installs from the Shopify app with no DNS records, and setup takes under 20 minutes.
  • Identity. Signal resolves visitors against Upstack's own identity graph of 750M+ devices and 150M+ customers, using deterministic and probabilistic matching, and an Upstack ID lasts the life of the customer.
  • Terms. Signal is month to month with a 21-day free trial.
  • Where Blotout is stronger. More destinations, HIPAA plans with a BAA, single-tenant infrastructure, self-hosting, and lead generation and Salesforce Commerce Cloud use cases that Upstack doesn't target.

The full side-by-side, including a cost comparison at 7,500 orders a month, is on our Blotout alternative for Shopify page.

Blotout alternatives

If Blotout's pricing model or contract doesn't suit you, these are the tools Shopify brands most often compare it with:

  • Upstack Signal: server-side tracking priced per order, with identity resolution built in and no DNS changes.
  • Elevar: server-side tracking built on Google Tag Manager, for teams that want to manage their own container.
  • Stape: hosting for server-side Google Tag Manager, for teams with tagging expertise in-house.
  • Littledata: a Shopify data layer built around Google Analytics 4 accuracy.
  • Shopify's own Meta integration: the Conversions API connection in Shopify's Facebook and Instagram app, which covers Meta only.
