The best Retention.com alternative depends on what you want from an identified visitor. For a published per-identity price, Opensend starts at $400 a month billed annually ($500 billed monthly). For per-match pricing with matches sent to Meta's Conversions API, Upstack Audience starts at $200 a month on top of a Signal plan. Tie adds predictive scores and inbox placement on an annual contract. If you only want abandonment flows to fire for subscribers you already have, look at Wunderkind or Instant.
We checked every price, plan, trial, integration and data-source claim for these Retention.com alternatives on each vendor's own pricing page, product pages or FAQ on October 23, 2026. Upstack Audience is our product and appears in the first group, with its limitations listed as plainly as everyone else's. If Retention.com still fits after reading this, we say when.

How does Retention.com work?
Retention.com puts a pixel on your site and matches anonymous visitors against what it calls a network of consented profiles: "Every person in our network has opted in to partner marketing," per its DTC ecommerce page. Matched emails are inbox-verified and synced to your email platform in real time, where they do two jobs:
List growth.Net-new contacts from shoppers who never filled in a form on your site.
Abandonment recovery. Your browse, cart and checkout flows fire for subscribers who were shopping without being recognized.
It also pushes hashed-email audiences to Meta and supports SMS recovery. Retention.com says it holds 250M+ US identities with 600+ attributes each, is SOC 2 Type II certified, and is CAN-SPAM and CCPA aligned. Its network is geofenced to the US, and it collects no net-new anonymous data from the EU or UK.
On price, its comparison with Opensend describes a flat monthly fee, month to month and pausable in slow seasons. The amount isn't published.
Why do people look for Retention.com alternatives?
Retention.com is one of the better-known tools in this category, and many brands use it. The reasons people compare it come up again and again:
No published price. You learn the flat fee on a call. Opensend, Tie, Customers.ai and Upstack all publish at least an entry price.
US traffic only. If a large share of your visitors are outside the US, a US-geofenced network leaves them unidentified.
Different views on new contacts. Retention.com adds people who never signed up on your site, then verifies and calibrates them to protect deliverability. Wunderkind's own comparison page argues the other way and only emails visitors already identified by first-party data. Which approach suits you depends on your list and your sender reputation.
Wanting identity in ad platforms, not just email. Retention.com sends hashed-email audiences to Meta. Some brands want identity attached to the events they already send through the Conversions API.
Competing head-to-head claims. Retention.com publishes a test in which it earned 2.4 times Opensend's revenue on the same traffic; Wunderkind publishes one claiming a 240% lift over Retention.com. Both are vendor tests, which is a good reason to run your own.
How we compared these tools
Each tool was checked on the same questions: where the identity data comes from; what you pay for and the lowest published price; whether new contacts land in your own email platform or stay with the vendor; what happens to subscribers you already have; what reaches Meta; whether you can try it first, and on what contract; and who should skip it. Everything comes from vendor pricing pages, product pages and FAQs, checked October 23, 2026. Where a vendor publishes no price we say "quoted," and we left out review-site ratings because we didn't check them. For background on how identification works, see our guide to website visitor identification.
Retention.com alternatives that add new contacts to your email platform
These four do Retention.com's core job: they match anonymous visitors against outside data and put the result in your own marketing tools.
1
1. Opensend: per-identity pricing with a published price list
Our take. Opensend is the closest like-for-like swap. It sells the same two jobs, list growth and abandonment recovery, but you pay per identity delivered on a price list anyone can read, and the trial costs $1. The trade-off is that your bill grows with your traffic.
Skip it if you want one flat fee regardless of how many visitors are identified.
How it works, pricing, integrations, strengths and limitations
Best for
DTC brands that want to see the price before a call and pay for what they receive.
How it works
Connect identifies high-intent visitors and syncs them to your marketing platforms; Reconnect keeps identity across devices and browsers; Ignite sends behavioral event data to your platforms; Personas builds AI audience cohorts. Opensend's homepage describes a "proprietary database of opt-in consumer profiles" with 180M US shoppers and a 73% US match rate, and its pricing FAQ says it typically identifies 25 to 35% of anonymous visitors.
Pricing (October 2026)
Billed monthly, Tier 1 is $500 a month for 2,000+ identities ($0.25 each), Tier 2 $1,000 for 4,300+ ($0.233) and Tier 3 $2,000 for 9,500+ ($0.211), per its pricing page. Billed annually the same tiers are $400, $800 and $1,600 a month ($0.20, $0.186 and $0.168 per identity); the page opens on the annual prices. Enterprise is quoted. Identities can be capped and unused credit rolls over. 14-day trial for $1.
Integrations
Klaviyo, Meta, Google and TikTok, "and more," with a pixel, a Shopify app or a server-side install.
Strengths
A published price per identity and a cheap trial. It covers list growth, cross-device recognition and ad-platform data in one product.
Limitations
Cost scales with identities, so a traffic spike raises the bill unless you cap it. Its data-source detail goes no further than "partner sites."
2. Upstack Audience: per-match pricing with matches sent to Meta
Upstack is our product, so read this section knowing that.
Our take. Audience suits brands that want new contacts in Klaviyo or Omnisend and stronger Meta matching from the same identified visitor. You pay per resolved match from $200 a month, and existing Klaviyo contacts are never duplicated. It isn't a standalone tool: it runs on a Signal plan, and it only delivers to Klaviyo, Omnisend and Meta.
Skip it if you only want visitor identification without a tracking platform, or your email runs on something other than Klaviyo or Omnisend.
How it works, pricing, data and privacy, strengths and limitations
Best for
Shopify brands on Upstack Signal, or planning to be, that want list growth plus better top-of-funnel matching on Meta.
How it works
Audience runs on the same Upstack pixel as Upstack Signal, our first-party tracking product. It matches anonymous visitors against our partner data network, verifies the email, and delivers the contact. One resolved visitor is one match, even when it carries several emails or phone numbers, and demographics are included. In Klaviyo, new contacts land on an UpstackData list and existing ones go to an UpstackData Reactivate list instead of being duplicated. The same match is sent to Meta through the Conversions API, so upper-funnel events such as page views and add-to-carts reach an Event Match Quality of 8+. Underneath, Signal resolves visitors against a graph of 750M+ devices and 150M+ customers using deterministic and probabilistic matching, and IDs persist for the life of the customer.
Pricing (October 2026)
From $0.025 per resolved match, per the Upstack Audience pricing page: Starter is 8,000 matches a month for $200, Growth 25,000 at $0.020 for $500, and Scale 80,000 at $0.015 for $1,200. Above that is quoted. Billed monthly on a yearly plan you can opt out of within 60 days; unused matches roll over within your term. 14-day free trial. Audience needs a Signal plan, priced separately on our Signal and Attribution plans.
Data and privacy
Partner data is collected on an opt-in basis, and California residents can opt out under the CCPA.
Strengths
A published per-match price, contacts never duplicated in Klaviyo, and identity sent to Meta on your events rather than only as an audience. In a Shopify apparel brand's pilot in September 2025, the brand logged 106 orders in the first 7 days, 7 to 8% of its daily orders came from shoppers Audience identified, and the flow's unsubscribe rate was 2.8%.
Limitations
Requires a Signal plan. Delivers only to Klaviyo, Omnisend and Meta, with no Attentive, Postscript or Mailchimp integration. A yearly plan, where Retention.com sells month to month. We don't publish the size of the partner network.
3. Tie: identity, predictive scores and inbox placement
Tie was called Revenue Roll until its rebrand; meettie.com still says "formerly Revenue Roll."
Our take. Tie is the broadest platform here: identity, predictive engagement scores and Primary-inbox placement drawn from one credit balance, with Postscript and Attentive among its SMS integrations. It's also the most committed purchase. Identification starts on a $2,000-a-month plan, and every plan is a 12-month contract.
Skip it if you want month-to-month terms or an identification budget under $2,000 a month.
How it works, pricing, integrations, strengths and limitations
Best for
Larger brands that want identity, predictive scoring and deliverability work from one vendor.
How it works
Tie ID matches anonymous visitors to profiles and syncs them to Klaviyo. Tie's FAQ says it recognizes up to 70% of US website visitors in real time, matches deterministically to the household and probabilistically to the person, and includes age, gender, household income and marital status. It describes its network as double opt-in, says it uses the consent tool already on your site, and is SOC 2 Type I and II certified.
Pricing (October 2026)
Credit-based on 12-month contracts, per its pricing page. Tie ID starts on Launch: 1.6M credits a year for $24K billed monthly ($2,000 a month), or $18K prepaid. Priority ($12K a year, no Tie ID) and Scale ($40K) sit either side, and Enterprise is custom. Tie ID uses one credit per unique visitor per month. Proof of concept is 7 days on Priority and 30 days from Launch up.
Integrations
Klaviyo, Attentive, Postscript, Shopify and Zapier, plus custom audiences in Meta and Google Ads, per its integrations page.
Strengths
SMS platforms, demographic filters you can use to spend credits only on shoppers worth identifying, and one balance across products.
Limitations
No identification below the $24K-a-year Launch plan, and a 12-month contract on every plan.
4. Customers.ai: visitor ID priced on your Klaviyo list
Our take. Customers.ai is built around Klaviyo: you price it by your Klaviyo profile count, and it adds Super CAPI, its server-side tracking for Meta Ads, as an add-on. It's a good fit for a Klaviyo-first brand that wants a short trial and a shorter contract than Tie. It doesn't say where its identity data comes from on the pages we checked.
Skip it if you don't use Klaviyo; its pricing and positioning are built around it.
How it works, pricing, strengths and limitations
Best for
Shopify brands running Klaviyo that want visitor ID and Meta server-side tracking from one vendor.
How it works
The X-Ray identity engine identifies visitors in the browser or on the server, with an API and webhooks. New-visitor identification is optional, creating a profile on the first visit that is enriched when the shopper opts in. Integrations include Shopify, Klaviyo, Meta Ads, Google Ads, HighLevel, Sendgrid, Sendlane and Salesforce, per its homepage.
Pricing (October 2026)
A calculator on its pricing page prices by Klaviyo profiles. At 1,000 profiles, X-Ray at the Platinum level is $299 a month on a 6-month contract billed monthly; the Gold level and larger volumes are quoted. The Alfred AI agent and Super CAPI are $149 a month each. Contracts run 3, 6 or 12 months, with a 7-day free trial and no card. It advertises a guaranteed 4x ROI.
Strengths
A short trial, contracts from 3 months, and Meta server-side tracking from the same vendor.
Limitations
The price rises with your Klaviyo list, the data source isn't published, and the minimum contract is 3 months.
Retention.com alternatives that recognize the subscribers you already have
These two don't sell you contacts from outside data. They make sure the shoppers you already know are recognized when they come back, so your flows fire.
5
5. Wunderkind: managed identity and triggered campaigns for large brands
Our take. Wunderkind is the full-service choice: its team can run your triggered email and text campaigns, working through the email platform or CDP you already have. It won't grow your list with outside contacts, since it only emails visitors identified by first-party data, and it publishes no price.
Skip it if you want self-serve setup, a published price, or net-new contacts.
How it works, pricing, strengths and limitations
Best for
Large ecommerce and retail brands that want triggered campaigns managed for them and care most about deliverability.
How it works
Wunderkind's homepage describes an identity network built on "over 9 billion devices," used by more than 700 brands, that maps visitors to the profiles in your own stack. Its comparison with Retention.com says it identifies 1 in 3 visitors through 1 billion consumer profiles, offers full-service or self-run integrations, and covers CAN-SPAM, CASL and GDPR.
6. Instant Audiences: first-party shopper capture for larger Shopify stores
Our take. Instant is closer to Retention.com's abandonment recovery than to its list growth. It captures shoppers' emails on your own site and remembers them on every return visit, so behavior-based flows fire. It's aimed at large Shopify stores, and the Audiences price isn't published.
Skip it if your store does under $250,000 a month, or you want new contacts from outside your own traffic.
How it works, pricing, strengths and limitations
Best for
Shopify stores above $250,000 a month in revenue that want more abandonment flows to fire from their own traffic.
How it works
Instant Audiences "captures and remembers first-party shopper data," identifies returning shoppers in real time and triggers flows on high-intent visits, per its Audiences page. Instant says 2,000+ brands use it, and it integrates with Shopify, Klaviyo and Meta.
Pricing (October 2026)
Audiences isn't priced separately on Instant's pricing page, which lists its AI email plans from $1,000 a month, month to month with no setup fees. It says it works best above $250,000 a month in Shopify revenue.
Strengths
First-party capture on your own site, month-to-month terms, and an AI email product from the same vendor.
Limitations
No published Audiences price, a high revenue threshold, and Shopify only.
7. SafeOpt: an opt-in deals list that keeps the contact
Our take. SafeOpt works differently from everything above. Shoppers join SafeOpt's deals list, usually through a checkbox on a partner's signup form, and SafeOpt emails them offers itself. Its FAQ says it "does not share your email address with our network of brands," so nothing lands in your Klaviyo. You reach the shopper; you don't get the contact.
Skip it if you want to grow and own your list.
How it works, pricing, strengths and limitations
Best for
Brands that want an opt-in deals audience to promote them without holding the contacts.
How it works
SafeOpt's FAQ describes a partner network of 2,000+ brands and publishers whose signup forms let shoppers join SafeOpt, with emails sent by SafeOpt and offers of up to 50% off. It notes that it "may receive a share of sales via affiliate links." Brands sign up through Minty, SafeOpt's brand-side site.
Retention.com is still the right tool if most of these are true:
You prefer a flat monthly fee to paying per identity, and its price works at your volume.
Your stack needs one of its many integrations, or delivery by API, CDP or flat file.
You want month-to-month terms you can pause in slow seasons.
Most of your traffic is in the US.
If that's you, the better move may be testing a second tool on the same traffic before deciding, since every vendor's head-to-head numbers are its own.
How to switch from Retention.com
Check your terms. Retention.com describes its plans as month to month and pausable; confirm the notice period in your own agreement.
Segment the contacts it added. In Klaviyo, keep a segment of contacts Retention.com created so you can compare their revenue and engagement with the new tool's.
Run the new tool alongside for two to four weeks on the same traffic. Compare revenue per email, unsubscribes and spam complaints, the measures Retention.com and Opensend use in their own tests.
Avoid double triggers. Make sure only one tool fires abandonment events for the same shopper, or your flows send twice. Our guide to Klaviyo abandonment flows and identity resolution explains how those events reach Klaviyo.
Protect your sender reputation. Introduce new contacts gradually and watch complaint rates in the first weeks.
Remove the Retention.com pixel and integration once the test is done.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best alternative to Retention.com?
It depends on the job. For a published per-identity price, Opensend. For per-match pricing with matches sent to Meta, Upstack Audience, if you also run Upstack Signal. For identity plus predictive scores and SMS integrations, Tie. If you only want abandonment flows to fire for existing subscribers, Wunderkind or Instant.
Is there a cheaper alternative to Retention.com?
Retention.com doesn't publish its flat fee, so a direct comparison needs a quote. Among published prices, Upstack Audience starts at $200 a month for 8,000 matches (plus a Signal plan), Customers.ai's X-Ray is $299 a month at 1,000 Klaviyo profiles (billed monthly on a 6-month contract), and Opensend starts at $400 a month billed annually, or $500 billed monthly, for 2,000+ identities.
How does Retention.com work?
A pixel on your site matches anonymous visitors against Retention.com's network of opted-in US profiles. Matched emails are inbox-verified and synced to your email platform, where they grow your list and let abandonment flows fire for subscribers who weren't recognized. It also sends hashed-email audiences to Meta.
Opensend vs Retention.com: what's the difference?
Both identify anonymous visitors for list growth and abandonment recovery. Opensend publishes per-identity pricing from $400 a month billed annually ($500 billed monthly), between $0.168 and $0.25 per identity depending on tier and billing, and a $1 trial, and describes 180M US shoppers in its network. Retention.com charges a flat monthly fee it doesn't publish, offers a 14-day trial, and describes 250M+ US identities with 600+ attributes. Retention.com publishes a head-to-head test in its own favor, so run your own before deciding.
Do Retention.com alternatives add contacts to Klaviyo?
Opensend, Upstack Audience, Tie and Customers.ai all deliver contacts to Klaviyo. Wunderkind and Instant work with subscribers you already have rather than adding outside contacts, and SafeOpt keeps the email address and sends offers itself.
Which Retention.com alternatives send identified shoppers to Meta?
Upstack Audience sends matches to Meta through the Conversions API, so upper-funnel events reach an Event Match Quality of 8+. Customers.ai offers Super CAPI server-side tracking, Opensend's Ignite sends event data to ad platforms, and Tie and Retention.com build Meta audiences. Our Event Match Quality guide explains why matching on events matters.
Is website visitor identification legal?
Each vendor here describes a consent basis for its data: Retention.com cites an opted-in network and CAN-SPAM and CCPA processes, Tie a double opt-in network, Opensend opt-in consumer profiles, and Upstack Audience opt-in partner data with a CCPA opt-out. Rules differ by country, and Retention.com collects no net-new data in the EU or UK. Our visitor identification guide covers the legal questions in more detail.
Compare Upstack Audience with Opensend
