Retention.com Review (2026): What It Is, How It Works, Whether It's Legit, Pros and Cons

Retention.com is a visitor identification service for US traffic. A pixel on your store matches anonymous shoppers against its network of opted-in profiles and sends verified emails to your email platform. That grows your list, and it lets your abandonment flows reach subscribers your platform didn't recognize. It launched as GetEmails in 2019, holds a 4.5 rating from 123 G2 reviews, and doesn't publish its price. If you're already comparing tools, see our Retention.com alternatives guide.

We checked everything in this review on October 24, 2026: Retention.com's website, help center and terms of service, and its G2 listing. Upstack is our product, and its Audience add-on competes with Retention.com, so we've stuck to what Retention.com publishes and what its customers say. Costs and contract terms are in our Retention.com pricing guide.

What is Retention.com?

Retention.com identifies anonymous visitors to a website and turns them into email contacts. Its pitch to online stores is that up to 95% of traffic leaves without giving an email, and that it can identify a share of those visitors, verify their addresses and send them to your email platform.

The company behind it is GetEmails, LLC, which trades as Retention.com, per its terms of service. Its About page gives the history:

  • 2019: Adam Robinson, Tate Blahnik and Diana Ross, three email industry veterans, launched GetEmails, which grew into Retention.com. They now run it as CEO, CTO and CRO.
  • 2024: the company launched RB2B, which applies the same idea to B2B website visitors.
  • Today: it calls itself an identity data company, shortened to R!, and sells to retailers, publishers, adtech firms, platforms and data companies as well as DTC brands. Its site footer names the ecommerce product Retention FLEX.

Its homepage claims 250M+ US identities with 600+ attributes each and 5,500 customers, and says it is SOC 2 Type II certified and CAN-SPAM and CCPA aligned. Its trial sign-up page and G2 profile give a smaller number, 1,500+ brands.

Is Retention.com the same as GetEmails?

Yes. GetEmails was the product's original name, and the company in Retention.com's terms is still GetEmails, LLC. One of the opt-out links in those terms still points to the getemails.com domain.

How does Retention.com work?

Retention.com works in three steps, per its DTC ecommerce page and help center: a pixel spots the visitor, Retention.com matches them against its network, and a verified email goes to your email platform. What happens next depends on which product the contact comes through, Grow or Reclaim.

The pixel and collection rules

You add Retention.com's script to your site or, on Shopify, connect its Shopify integration app and a Customer Events pixel. Retention.com says implementation takes less than 15 minutes. Collection rules decide which visitors are worth identifying: you set a minimum number of page views or seconds on a page, and Retention.com won't try to resolve anyone below it, per its collection rules guide.

Matching against its network

Retention.com says every person in its network has opted in to partner marketing, and that it keeps a consent record of the timestamp, source and IP address. Its Opensend comparison says it resolves visitors against its own graph and checks independent identity networks on top. The network is geofenced to the US, and it collects no net-new anonymous data from the EU or UK.

It quotes a 70 to 90% US match rate and says that figure measures the first step only: resolving a visitor to a hashed identifier. Fewer visitors reach your list once its filters run.

What it filters out before sending

  • A delay. Retention.com finds the email almost at once but waits 15 minutes by default, so a shopper who signs up or buys during the visit isn't claimed, per its attribution guide.
  • Suppression. Contacts already on your list, subscribed or unsubscribed, aren't collected, and new contacts are checked against your file daily.
  • Quality checks. It confirms the address is live and isn't a spam trap, looks at how recently the person engaged with email anywhere, and checks whether it recently passed the same person to another brand.
  • Calibration. It says contacts are calibrated to your engagement levels, with guardrails that control volume.

Grow: new contacts for your list

Grow sends you the emails of identified visitors who aren't on your list. Per its help center, it passes each address to your email platform once, and you warm the contact up with newsletters. Grow contacts don't receive abandonment flows unless you also run Reclaim.

Reclaim: abandonment flows for shoppers your platform can't see

Reclaim fires abandonment flows for two groups your email platform would otherwise miss: subscribers browsing on a different device, and visitors Retention.com holds an opt-in for through Grow. It sends its own events, such as Checkout Started Reclaim, to your email platform. In Klaviyo, you clone your existing abandonment flows, switch their trigger to Reclaim's events and add filters so a shopper enters only one flow, per its Klaviyo setup guide. Retention.com's team has to switch the feature on for you.

Retention.com says Reclaim adds 30 to 70% more abandonment flow revenue. That's its own figure. Our guide to Klaviyo abandonment flows and identity resolution explains why those flows miss returning shoppers in the first place.

SMS recovery and Meta audiences

It also sends more triggered texts by identifying subscribers who were shopping anonymously, and pushes hashed-email audiences to Meta for retargeting and lookalikes, per its Meta audiences page. On the pages we checked, Meta gets audiences only; Retention.com doesn't describe sending identity with your Conversions API events.

How Retention.com measures its results

Its dashboard reports revenue in two buckets, per its attribution guide:

  • Grow revenue counts orders from contacts it delivered, but only orders placed at least 12 hours after delivery. Contacts are tagged in your email platform, and any later order by a tagged contact counts.
  • Reclaim revenue comes from your email platform's own reporting on the Reclaim flows. The dashboard shows it for Klaviyo only.
  • Lifetime ROI combines the two and factors in what you've paid, as a ROAS-style ratio.
  • Meta audiences aren't counted in tracked revenue. Retention.com suggests testing them in their own ad sets.

Grow revenue counts every later order from a tagged contact, whether or not an email drove it, so read it as revenue from those contacts rather than revenue Retention.com caused. Retention.com itself recommends a segment of its contacts in your email platform to judge their lifetime value. The case studies on its site, such as Montana Knife Co's 34.6x ROI, are measured its way.

Retention.com says it has 100+ direct integrations, and its help center has Reclaim setup guides for platforms including Postscript, Cordial, Bloomreach and Iterable. It is an official Klaviyo technology partner.

Setup: what to expect

  1. Add the pixel. Retention.com puts this at less than 15 minutes.
  2. Connect your email platform and set your collection rules.
  3. Set up Reclaim flows. Clone your abandonment flows, switch the triggers, add the filters, and ask Retention.com to turn the feature on.
  4. Update your privacy policy. Its terms require you to describe the service and link to its opt-out page, and they suggest wording.
  5. Segment its contacts in your email platform from day one, so you can measure them yourself.

Most of the G2 reviewers we read described setup as easy. One said onboarding and migrating flows took longer than expected.

How much does Retention.com cost?

Retention.com doesn't publish a price:

  • The fee. Its comparison pages describe a flat monthly fee for data access, with no charge for additional identities, and plans that are month to month and pausable in slow seasons.
  • The contract. Its terms put the fee and a service term in an order form. After that term, the contract runs month to month with 30 days' notice.
  • Trial. 14 days, with 1,000 leads.
  • Figures elsewhere. Its G2 listing shows Grow at $0.10 per lead and Reclaim at $79 a month, which don't match the flat-fee description on its own site.

Our Retention.com pricing guide covers the billing terms and what to ask for in a quote.

Retention.com reviews on G2: what customers say

On G2, Retention.com has a 4.5 rating from 123 reviews, as of October 24, 2026:

  • 87 five-star and 30 four-star reviews.
  • 5 three-star, 0 two-star and 1 one-star review.
  • Overall, 6 of 123 reviews (5%) are three stars or lower.

We found no Trustpilot profile for retention.com.

What reviewers say. We read the 10 reviews on the first page of G2's default sort, dated May 2021 to April 2026. G2 marks 9 of the 10 as incentivized, and 2 of the 10 describe B2B prospecting rather than a store.

ThemeReviews mentioning it
Easy setup6 of 10 (60%)
Contact quality or engagement that varies3 of 10 (30%)
Price that feels high or keeps rising3 of 10 (30%)
Damage to deliverability, or misleading attribution claims1 of 10 (10%)

Most reviewers found it easy to start and useful for list growth. The critical ones question contact quality and price for smaller teams. A 3.5-star review from February 2024 goes further: lower conversion and engagement, damage to the brand's deliverability and domain reputation, and attribution claims the reviewer called misleading. That's the main risk of adding contacts who never signed up on your site, and the reason Retention.com builds in a delay, suppression and engagement checks.

Is Retention.com legit?

Yes, by the usual checks:

  • A named company and team. GetEmails, LLC, trading as Retention.com, with named founders and published terms governed by Texas law.
  • Time in business. Operating since 2019, first as GetEmails.
  • Security and partners. It says it is SOC 2 Type II certified, with audit reports available on request, and an official Klaviyo technology partner.
  • Consent records. It says each record carries the source and timestamp of the opt-in, and it runs a CCPA opt-out form and a Do Not Sell process for California residents.
  • Customer reviews. 4.5 from 123 G2 reviews, with 1 one-star review.

Legit doesn't mean risk-free. The terms make you responsible for describing the service in your privacy policy and linking to its opt-out, and you indemnify Retention.com if you use the data unlawfully or skip a required disclosure or consent. Emailing people who never signed up on your site also carries deliverability risk. Our visitor identification guide covers the legal questions in more detail.

Where Retention.com is stronger than Upstack Audience

Upstack Audience competes with Retention.com for list growth, so here is where Retention.com has the edge:

  • It stands alone. Retention.com needs no other product. Upstack Audience needs an Upstack Signal plan, and Signal is $149 a month for up to 1,000 orders.
  • More destinations. Retention.com delivers to twelve email platforms, SMS tools, CDPs, APIs and flat files. Audience delivers to Klaviyo and Omnisend only, plus the match to Meta for upper-funnel events.
  • Abandonment recovery. Reclaim is built to fire abandonment flows for subscribers your platform doesn't recognize.
  • A shorter commitment. Month to month after the order form's term. Audience runs on a yearly plan, billed monthly, with a 60-day opt-out.

Where Audience differs:

  • A published price. From $0.025 per resolved match, where one identified visitor is one match. Starter is 8,000 matches for $200 a month, Growth 25,000 for $500 and Scale 80,000 for $1,200, and unused matches roll over. There's a 14-day free trial.
  • Meta. Each match also goes to Meta for upper-funnel events, not only into an audience.
  • Data basis. Third-party partner data collected on an opt-in basis, with a CCPA opt-out.

Is Retention.com worth it?

For a US-heavy store on Klaviyo, with enough traffic for a flat fee to spread and a sender reputation that can absorb new contacts, Retention.com is worth a trial. Use the 14 days to measure the contacts yourself: a segment in your email platform, revenue per email, unsubscribes and spam complaints.

It's a weaker fit if much of your traffic is outside the US, if you want a published price, or if what you want is identity on the events you send Meta. Our Retention.com alternatives guide covers Opensend, Tie and five other options, and our guide to adding anonymous Shopify visitors to Klaviyo covers the other ways to identify more shoppers.
